Cyborg Rainbow: Redefining Gender and Identity through Participatory Jewellery

Award-winning designer Dian Chen explores the fluidity of gender and identity in the post-human age

Informed by philosophers like Rosi Braidotti and Donna Haraway, Dian Chen developed a deep interest in approaching gender identity issues through the concepts of post-humanism, cyborgs, cyber-punk, and science fiction in pop culture. This led to the creation of the Cyborg Rainbow jewellery collection, a participatory piece that challenges traditional notions of gender and identity.

With a flexible adoption of industrial manufactured materials, the Cyborg Rainbow collection is completely constructed by interchangeable parts. The basic frames and spare parts, made from materials such as aluminum, acrylic, stainless steel, and rubber, allow wearers to replace and even remake the jewellery using the available "chips and bars". This participatory aspect empowers individuals to create their own unique pieces and fosters a fluid relationship between body, objects, and identity.

Dian Chen's intention is to construct a context in which the wearer can not only wear the jewellery but also actively participate in its creation and experience. By offering infinite possibilities for customization and self-expression, the Cyborg Rainbow collection blurs the boundaries between the wearer and the design, inviting them to explore a fantasy post-human future.

The Cyborg Rainbow collection was realized using electroplated copper, aluminum alloy, acrylic, stainless steel, rubber, and latex. The necklace, measuring 270* 60* 280mm, is a striking statement piece that embodies the fusion of technology and organic forms.

This groundbreaking collection was exhibited at Central Saint Martins in June 2019 and AN+ ART and Design Museum from March to June 2020. It garnered attention for its innovative approach to jewellery design and its thought-provoking exploration of gender and identity in the post-human age.

Dian Chen's research for the Cyborg Rainbow collection involved a combination of desktop research and practice as research. Drawing on theories of post-humanism, science fiction, and pop culture, she translated her research inquiries into tangible design elements. The result is a materialized exploration of cyborg theory, challenging societal norms and opening up new possibilities for self-expression.

The main challenge in Dian Chen's project was not only to materialize cyborg and post-human theories in the design itself but also to create an ongoing and firsthand experience for her customers. By allowing them to actively engage with the design process, she successfully bridges the gap between the wearer and the design, fostering a sense of ownership and personal connection.

The Cyborg Rainbow collection has received widespread acclaim and recognition. In 2021, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Cyborg Rainbow collection stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

With the Cyborg Rainbow collection, Dian Chen pushes the boundaries of traditional jewellery design, inviting wearers to embrace their individuality and challenge societal norms. By offering a participatory and customizable experience, she empowers individuals to express their true selves and explore the infinite possibilities of a post-human future.
